What is the issue of most concern for you?

Move over political correctness! Your days are gone.

How many times have you heard stories about western governments and community institutions blocking Christian groups from publicising Christian events or stories? We don’t hear much of that if it were Buddhist, or Muslim, but you would if it were Christian.

As a pluralist society, I would have thought all faiths, including those without any faith, are to be treated equally. And yet, at this year's 2010 Easter Show, the Royal Agricultural Society refused the NSW Bible Society from having a stall to promote Easter! How ridiculous!

The Easter Show by its very name implies its direct association with the most important Christian event, and yet it has an unwritten policy no less to refuse exhibitions by religious groups at the show.

In Parramatta, there had been a similar undercurrent of political correctness for many years. Until this term of new Councillors (elected in September 2008), with now a majority on our side, we have begun reintroducing Christian messages during Christian events.

For Easter 2010, almost 100 Easter signs were erected across the Parramatta local government area for the Easter season.

Previously, debate over "Merry Christmas" was successful with signs made up for Christmas 2009, and with the instruction to change all signs for Christmas 2010 to have the words "Merry Christmas" printed instead of the more political correct and subdued phrases. And Christmas signs were also to be erected in Council's childcare centres.

And last year, under a notice of motion (the Council equivalent of a Parliament's Private Member's Bill) that I wrote and proposed, our first Christmas lights competition was held successfully which included a category for nativity scenes so as to emphasize the origins of Christmas.

Thanks also go to John Chedid and Mike McDermott for spearheading these initiatives too for the Christmas and Easter signs, and my Liberal and Independent Councillors colleagues for their combined support. With a little bit of hope, this will be the tide that reverses political correctness, starting from Parramatta.
