Welcome to this Seniors Week 2010 and welcome to Sharing Stories between Young and Old! May I firstly recognise the Barramattagul of the Dharug people as the traditional custodians of this land and acknowledge their sustainable culture that survived unchanged for thousands of years. And I also recognise the successive waves of migrants who have come to our great continent and, along with our Aboriginal Australian peoples, helped to make
I am very pleased to see John Moxon, our 2010 Parramatta Senior Citizen of the Year. I also see members of the Older Women's Network whom I dare not cross. We also have children from Rosehill Public School along with their Principal Peter. We also have children from St Oliver's Primary. There's Rachel Elliott from In Harmony. I can see the Australian Chinese Community Association here. And there's also students from our Australian Institute of Performing Arts, of which produced one of our most endeared Australian Idol, Nathan Brake. Seniors Week is an annual celebration of older wiser Australians and the tremendous contribution they make to our families, neighbourhoods and community. Older and wiser Australians fulfil many important roles – they are the guardians of our history and heritage, they are our mentors and guides, and in this 21st century, many are also our care givers and volunteers. “Sharing Stories between Young and Old” aims to: (a) Increase awareness of the cultural makeup of
(b) Enable an interactive exchange of experience and knowledge between seniors and young people, and (c) Provide an opportunity for all to enjoy a morning of socialising, building a sense of community and develop understanding between generations.
