NSW Planning Minister agrees with Chiang Lim to a Review of Boarding Houses law

MEDIA RELEASE - 28 SEPTEMBER 2010

With the NSW building industry experiencing stunted growth, a number of developers have sought to capitalise on the NSW State Government's new State Environmental Planning Policy (Affordable Rental Housing) 2009. This SEPP, also known as the SEPP for boarding houses, is designed to increase the amount and diversity of affordable housing across NSW.

Historically, boarding houses have too often attracted great notoriety. The public’s general experiences of boarding houses are usually connected with individuals who bring criminal elements into the local neighbourhoods as well as their disregard for the local environment.

Unanimous support for Kfarsghab Place

MEDIA RELEASE - 28 SEPTEMBER 2010

For most Australians, Kfarsghab in Lebanon is not well known. Yet their peoples are one of the very first wave of Lebanese migrants to call Australia home since the late 1800s. In Parramatta, Kfarsghab descendants have lived in Parramatta for almost 130 years, are one of the largest Lebanese-Australian communities locally, and are exemplary Australians.

On Monday, 27 September 2010, Parramatta City Councillors unanimously agreed to Deputy Lord Mayor Chiang Lim’s request to begin the formal processes of renaming a small part of Amos Street, east of Good Street, to be Kfarsghab Place. With the written support from almost all landowners who would be affected, and also with 389 petitioners with hundreds more anticipated, the renaming to Kfarsghab Place appears to be broadly supported.

Help save Richie Benaud's family home

MEDIA RELEASE - 23 AUGUST 2010

Richie Benaud’s family home is proposed to be redeveloped for the construction of a 2 storey dual occupancy at 5 Sutherland Road, North Parramatta. Parramatta City Council is urgently seeking an Interim Heritage Order from the NSW State Government.

“In addition to Richie Benaud’s success as an international cricketer, as a member of the Australian and ICC Cricket Halls of Fame, he is undoubtedly the most influential cricketer and cricket personality. His family home and backyard during his formative years is where Richie Benaud developed his googly, topspinner and flipper and other cricket skills, thereby making his family home a cultural heritage item,” said Deputy Lord Mayor Chiang Lim.

Is Labor's newest promise going to be a reality?

MEDIA RELEASE - 11 AUGUST 2010

Shirley MacLaine has a wonderful saying. “It is useless to hold a person to anything s/he says while s/he is in love, drunk, or running for office.”

With today's Federal Labor’s announcement of $2.6bn for the Parramatta-Epping Rail Link, I am cautiously pleased yet sceptical, because when you have a letter from the NSW Transport Minister dated only 10 days ago stating that the NSW State Government’s 10 year horizon does not include the Parramatta-Epping Rail Link, is a promise to be taken seriously?
