MEDIA RELEASE - 28 SEPTEMBER 2010
Despite not being in the 2010 NRL finals, the name Parramatta, derived from its Aboriginal name ‘Burramatta’ which means “where eels lie down”, Parramatta Eels fans will not lie down and their loyalty and support for the Parramatta Eels continue unabated. On Monday night, 27 September 2010, Deputy Lord Mayor Chiang Lim received unanimous support to begin the process of renaming a small part of Grose Street, west of O’Connell Street, Parramatta, to Eels Place.
“It is amazing that for over 50 years, Parramatta Eels has had its corporate address on O’Connell Street. Thanks to the support from the board of the Parramatta Leagues Club, the City of Parramatta agrees that ‘Eels Place’ should be given birth,” said Clr Lim. As the Parramatta Eels set their eyes on the 2011 NRL competition, the naming of Eels Place will also be a welcome boost for morale. “Just imagine, ‘Eels Place’ street blades adorned in the homes of every Eels fan across Australia! I cannot wait for this to materialise, and to even have it on our HMAS Parramatta IV ship and other places around the world,” said Deputy Lord Mayor Chiang Lim. The Council resolution for ‘Eels Place’ now begins a formal process which includes public consultation before it can be submitted to the Geographic Names Board for finalisation. *** END *** For any further information, please contact Deputy Lord Mayor Clr Chiang Lim, http://www.chianglim.com.au/mediareleases |
