MEDIA RELEASE - 10 MAY 2010

Instead of Australian or ANZAC related flags and banners in the lead up to ANZAC Day, Parramatta’s Deputy Lord Mayor Clr Chiang Lim saw promotions of the Autumn Carnival relating to the Golden Slipper horse race, the Mothers' Day Classic and the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi.

“There will always be worthy causes to support, and that includes Parramatta’s promotion of Christmas and Easter. But when there was not a single flag or banner in the city promoting ANZAC Day, one could be forgiven you were in another country,” said Clr Lim who is himself a migrant to Australia 23 years ago.

Plans for the formation of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) began in November 1914. But ANZAC was a First World War army corps that was formed in Egypt in 1915 and operated during the Battle of Gallipoli.

“These days, Australians recognise ANZAC Day as our other national day, commemorating especially those who served and gave their lives to defend Australia, as well as those serving in our Australian defence forces today,” said Clr Lim.

Parramatta City Councillors unanimously supported Clr Lim’s proposal to ensure that for 2011 and beyond, ANZAC Day will be properly and publicly observed. In addition, Parramatta City Councillors also unanimously agreed to upgrade its Parramatta Cenotaph and the war memorials in Epping and Granville, so as to inscribe the names of those fallen Australian men and women from the region who have not been included for at least the last 10 years.

During this year’s ANZAC Day, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd invited proposals for suitable memorials in anticipation of the 100th Anniversary of World War I in 2014. In Parramatta, given her first sister city is with Israel’s Be’er Sheva due to Australia’s world famous light horsemen and the Battle for Be’er Sheva on 31 October 1917, Parramatta City Council will now work with the Department of Veteran Affairs, Defence, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Returned Servicemen’s League in order to develop fitting remembrances.

Recently, an emissary of the City of Be’er Sheva visited Parramatta and the Deputy Lord Mayor Clr Chiang Lim in order to renew both cities’ connection with the still world famous World War I cavalry charge of the 4th and 12th Australian Light Horse Regiments.

“As a deeply appreciative migrant Australian, I am simply doing my bit to ensure that future ANZAC Days are not only properly commemorated, but to also achieve an even heightened sense of appreciation and reverence by all Australians, in honour of all those who have served in the past, and those who serve today to keep Australia and Australians free,” said Clr Lim.
