Jewel of Parramatta comes out of the closet

MEDIA RELEASE - 22 OCTOBER 2008

During the consideration of an extension of the operating lease of the Lake Parramatta Reserve Kiosk, the new majority on Parramatta City Council changed how its under-performing assets will be conducted in the future.

"We are most grateful to the current operators of the kiosk who took it from a basket-case to a decent cafe. But that's not enough in the 21st century for a return to Council of $6500 per year. That's about $125 rent per week for the jewel of Parramatta. That's even cheaper than most residential rental properties in Parramatta!" said Liberal Councillor Chiang Lim.

The Lake Parramatta Reserve Kiosk sits discretely within North Parramatta. So much so that many people from Parramatta do not even know it exists. The lake has also been cleaned up such that it is now viable for swimming subject to supervision. Around it are also walking a cycling tracks and BBQ facilities.

" Parramatta faces over $7m in cashflow budget deficit, something this new Council has inherited from the previous administration. So, you will understand if we aggressively demand financial accountability without increasing taxes or rates on our businesses and ratepayers," said Clr Lim.

The new lease will be for up to two years which includes two half year options to the current operator.

"Along with the rest of the market, the existing operator is welcome to submit proposals on how we can have a top class cafe, restaurant, corporate standard meeting rooms and function space operating day and night. We want to achieve a shining example which everyone can be proud of," said Clr Lim.

Amid opposition that such a proposal would be an over-development, Clr Lim said, "at the moment it is under-developed. Besides, any jewel of Parramatta has to be tasteful, not crass. No one likes a football sized diamond on your wife's finger. Do you?"
