Lord Mayor Joins Fight in Combating Car Hoons

MEDIA RELEASE - 30 APRIL 2009

On Monday, a Lord Mayoral minute confirms Council’s renewed fight against car hoons. Late last year, Clr Chiang Lim had previously reported Council’s 11 month trial where Parramatta Council’s rangers were placed in hot spots booking drivers for their excessive and objectionable noise.

“Enough is enough. Those hotted up cars and inconsiderate drivers can take their own so called musical appreciation and sharing somewhere,” said Clr Chiang Lim.

From 11 night time campaigns over the last 11 months, Parramatta Council’s rangers have booked 147 vehicles, fining them $150 for each offence or $300 each for business vehicles. These infringement notices are issued under the underused "cause offensive noise from motor vehicle sound system" powers.

During Parramatta Council’s rangers’ trial campaign against car hoons, there was a high of 18 vehicles fined from a single night, through to a subsequent drop to as low as 6 vehicles fined in a single night, demonstrating that these campaigns against car hoons are working but only to a point.

“The Lord Mayor and all the Councillors have vindicated that we want to get tough on these car hoons. The trial ranger campaigns will now be one of even more tactics Council will seriously examine to address and eliminate car hoons from our streets in Parramatta,” said Clr Lim.

Possible actions from the Council’s future attempts could include legislative amendments banning unacceptable modifications to vehicles, as well as greater powers for the police and Council rangers to issue even more costly fines to car hoons.

“Wickedly, I would love to have these car hoons detained and forced to listen to say Barry Manilow music in a room, just like we are forced to listen to theirs. Let’s see if they like it!” said Clr Lim.
