On cycling, we disagree with Sydney's Lord Mayor Moore

MEDIA RELEASE - 24 MAY 2010

After the public exhibition of Parramatta’s Integrated Transport Plan for the Parramatta City Centre, one of the striking policy differences to the City of Sydney is its handling of cyclists.

“Parramatta has achieved an approach that addresses our CBD’s future transport needs, but not ‘sell out the rights’ of our businesses, pedestrians or commuters in preference for cyclists like in Sydney CBD,” said Deputy Lord Mayor Clr Chiang Lim.

The Integrated Transport Plan, approved on 24 May 2010, addresses Parramatta’s growing CBD needs in terms of car parking, buses, rail and ferry transport, roads, taxis, motorcycles, cycling, and other transport and congestion management issues.

“Unlike Sydney CBD, our cycling network is already largely off-road. And recognising that our cyclists presently represent 1% of all transport modes, our future cycling expansion will be gradual and will not take away any pedestrian footpath or any parking bays, yet keeping in mind everyone’s safety,” said Clr Lim.

As the key central business district for Western Sydney, this new Integrated Transport Plan also commits Parramatta City Council to continue lobbying for the Epping-to-Parramatta missing rail link, the Christie Report’s proposal to connect the North West to Parramatta by rail via Castle Hill, as well as the Inner West to Parramatta by RiverCat.

“With anticipation that the NSW State Government and the Federal Government will someday soon actually support these transport needs of Parramatta, the North West and Western Sydney, we will then begin to see transport improvements for our city and region,” said Clr Lim.
