By Di Bartok, Parramatta Advertiser, 5 July 2010 PARRAMATTA Council’s illegal dumping blitz has been hailed a success, with a drastic reduction in rubbish strewn in the streets. The council ratified its draft illegal dumping policy on Monday night after councillors agreed that a proactive approach to stamping out illegal dumping had worked. The council’s approach involved a number of strategies including setting up a Dob in a Dumper number, making body corporates responsible for rubbish dumped outside their buildings and installing cameras in hot spots. During the strategy’s trial period, February to April, the council investigated 223 complaints and issued 20 clean-up notices.
Parramatta Advertiser, 5 July 2010During the past financial quarter there has been a reduction of 20 tonnes of waste removed from the city streets with an estimated saving of $100,000 in the cost of the council carting away rubbish. The council brought in the anti-dumping measures following complaints from 11-year-old Laith Jamal, who was upset over rubbish such as discarded furniture dumped in his Rosehill street.
On Monday night, Cr Chedid praised council rangers for implementing the policy. ``It was a youth, Laith Jamal, who embarrassed council and made councillors act,’’ Cr Chedid said. ``It was a great defining matter for the city.’‘ Cr Mark Lack said that since calling for public help, the council had been receiving more specific information, such as registration numbers of cars spotted dumping rubbish. Councillors decided there should be an annual community pride day to highlight the need to keep the streets rubbish-free. Click here for more information from Parramatta City Council |

After Laith’s story appeared in the Advertiser late last year, the council, led by Cr John Chedid, decided to get tough on people who dump household rubbish and furniture in the streets.
