Parramatta - the strangled, forgotten CBD

The Daily Telegraph, 4 September 2009

By Rhys Haynes

PEAK-HOUR public transport in and out of Sydney's second-largest CBD should be increased to cope with overcrowding.

Parramatta City Council said train and bus services into the geographical centre of Sydney were unable to cope with the amount of people working for the growing number of corporations relocating to the area.

Lauren Kady, 20, who works as a retail manager at Westfield, travels each day from Milsons Point to Parramatta in peak hour.

"We want the Government to start treating Parramatta like the city that it is," Parramatta Mayor Tony Issa said.

More than 90,000 workers travel to Parramatta local government area every day, with another 20,000 residents, 30,000 workers and 30 new skyscrapers expected in the next 20 years.

"It is vital that we push forward with integrated transport solutions to support Parramatta's growth as a destination, not just a departure point," Mr Issa said.

She always has a seat going to work but finds it frustrating at night when there are limited services.

"More trains going out of Parramatta at night would be great," she said. "I get to the station after work and usually wait about 15 minutes for a train."
