Put religion back on agenda | Put religion back on agenda |

Parramatta Advertiser, 25 August 2010 CHRISTMAS is back in a big way in Parramatta – and who could argue against that? As a mostly-Christian country which is tolerant of all religions, there should be no shame in celebrating the most important event on the Christian calendar, without hiding behind the innocuous Seasons Greetings. People who follow other faiths, happy that they can celebrate their religion freely in Australia, generally are happy to see the Christmas message festooned everywhere. But, unfortunately, too often our political and civic leaders are so scared of offending non-Christians, that they end up upsetting Christians – in a Christian country!Good on Parramatta councillors for taking this stance when other councils, including Sydney City, have baulked at being so brave. It is not about shoving Christmas down people’s throats but, rather, acknowledging that it is a special time for most Australians. With Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s declared atheism being a factor in the swing away from Labor – even among non-Christians – now is the time to put religion back on the agenda. So we have four months to look forward to a merry, colourful and full-on Christian Christmas in Parramatta. Goodwill to all men and women. |
